Simple measures to help avoid pet obesity
Posted by Charlotte Wright on
With pet obesity being one of the most talked about topics in the pet food industry, many dog owners are looking for ways to help maintain a healthy weight for their dog.
The main contributing factors to this epidemic are put simply, too many calories going in, and not enough exercise to burn them off.
Here are some top tips on how to keep your hounds in shape.
Use scales to weigh food at mealtimes
It is easy to overestimate the amount of food your dog should be fed when you use a scoop, or even free-pour. Doing this on a daily basis quickly leads to overconsumption of calories without you even realising.
Scooping by hand is inconsistent and often is underestimated, leading to pets being fed more than necessary.
Quality over quantity
Go for quality over quantity of treats an choose them carefully. Just about every hound enjoys a healthy dog treat and you don't want to deprive them of life's simple joys, but do it in a responsible way.
If your dog is overweight, go for a low fat treat that won't add to the problem. It is recommended that treats should not count for more than 10% of your dog's daily calorie consumption.
Play time!
Use dog toys and puzzles to make your dogs work for their treats instead of guzzling them down quickly. Canine enrichment is so important and will help keep your dog stimulated mentally and physically, and reduces boredom.
Get fit together
Walking, running, Canicross- whatever you prefer. Exercising with your dog is not only good for both of you, but is also a great way to bond, relax and enjoy yourselves.
If you are worried about your dog's weight, then speak to your vet who will be able to advise you further.
