Get to know the French Bulldog
Posted by Warren Smith on
The distinctive, adorable French Bulldog breed has become one of the most popular breeds for dog owners in recent years, being cited as the most popular here in the UK and across the pond in the United States.
History of the French Bulldog: Quite English
While the name ‘French Bulldog’ suggests that the breed is entrenched in French culture, passed down from the annals of Normandy folklore…the reality is more English. During the Industrial Revolution in England, many lace workers emigrated to France for work. The grafters took their pet bulldogs across the Channel in this relocation pursuit.
The British Bulldogs would end up breeding with local French terrier-type dogs until a new type of Bulldog appeared and became commonplace. With the new French influence on the dog, it soon became known as the French Bulldog, as we know to this day.
French Bulldog temperament: What are they like?
French bulldogs love attention! They demand it from you! While conservative with their bark, they can still be loud with their distinct breathing patterns and bellowing snoring habits. While they like a little walk, they don’t need or want much exercise - and certainly won’t be joining you on a morning jog!
People living alone, potentially in high-rise flats, are known to connect with French Bulldogs. They are incredibly affectionate (helping with human loneliness) and don’t require much exercise, which is ideal for city-slicker singles with no garden.
French Bulldog Size: How big are they?
French Bulldogs are typically considered toy dog breeds, with few growing past 35cm in height or weighing much more than 13kg. Unlike some smaller breeds, Frenchies are known to be playful, affectionate and quite easy-going.
National French Bulldog Day: When is it?
Did you know that this breed has its dedicated date day? January 13th every year is the observed date for these dogs; why not treat them to a slightly longer walk on that day or even more attention?
Of course, you could always observe the more expansive ‘Bulldog Day’ on the 9th of June. The UK Bulldog Rescue charity pioneered this date to celebrate this fabulous dog breed.
Compare dog food: What is best for the French Bulldog?
Given that dog food and even dog treat recipes vary, it’s worth considering what you feed your French Bulldog, especially when you consider the common health issues this breed can have, which, if not maintained, can severely impact the French bulldog's life expectancy.
Dog food experts offer different advice on what is best for French Bulldogs. While high-quality protein is a common theme, some studies suggest that Frenchies prefer salmon and beef. Select vegetables and berries are also advised as part of a nutrient-rich and balanced diet.
At the Innocent Hound, we have just the products for your delightful French Bulldog: Air-Dried British Beef Stew and Air-Dried Wild Salmon Fishcakes. When this breed has quality food, a loving home, good lifestyle conditions, and enough activity, a French Bulldog's lifespan can be as long as 10-12 years.
