Best Dog Walks in North Yorkshire

Posted by Warren Smith on

Are you local to North Yorkshire or visiting the area? Whether you’ve been before or are a first-time visitor, giving yourself and your dog a refreshing dog walk route is always lovely.

North Yorkshire is a stone’s throw from our site in Wetherby, so we wanted to share some of our local knowledge, including our favourite walks from the Yorkshire Dales to the coastal delights.

Grassington and Linton Falls

Grassington is a beautiful, picturesque village with the River Wharfe running alongside it. Dog walkers are often seen in the town heading off for the circular walk or just a jaunt down the riverbank.

The entire route yields plenty of Yorkshire viewpoints overlooking the area's charm. If your dog loves the water, this is a great option. Exercise caution to keep your dog safe, however, as the currents can be pretty feisty at specific times of the year.

The Stray in Harrogate

If you’re near Harrogate town centre, it is worth considering The Stray, which is right in the centre. This 200-acre green space blooms with multiple colours due to the wide range of flowers seen here, especially during the warmer months. Almost as colourful as your dog’s personality!

Coast and History: Whitby Abbey Walk

If you want to admire beautiful historical architecture and see the Yorkshire coast in a single walk, then the walk to and from Whitby Abbey is for you. The ancient former monastery and Benedictine abbey overlooks the North Sea and the East Cliff above Whitby. While in the area, you could walk down the jetty and see the twin lighthouses.

Of course if your dog likes the beach, you could always take a slight jaunt on the sand. Of course, be forewarned that it’ll get everywhere!

Skipton Castle Woods

Those visiting Skipton will be acutely aware of the castle in the town, which dominates much of the town’s local tourist trade. The castle might be of little interest to your little Welsh Terrier

But to the side of said structure is the adjoining Skipton Castle Woods, a bountiful space with touches of history dotted throughout this woodland walk. Your dog will be in their element as it explores the Castle Woods!

Cathedral cities don’t get as idyllic as Ripon in North Yorkshire. It is also blessed with Fountains Abbey, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. Walking around these ancient ruins and grounds with your dog, potentially handing out a dog treat or two along the way, is one of the more marvellous spectacles in North Yorkshire.

Ribblehead Viaduct near the Yorkshire Dales

This iconic structure on the Yorkshire-Cumbria border was initially built by Midland Railway to connect Settle and Carlisle. The surrounding area's circular walk is beautiful at any time of day, yet its appeal is enhanced at sunrise and sunset. Watching the world go by with your dog here might just be the stuff of Oscar-winning movies and hit music videos.

Be sure to fuel your dog!

If you plan to go on one of these walks, give your dog enough fuel to master these North Yorkshire trails. What is the best dog food? One that has high protein content and is grain-free, like ours!
