Born in the Welsh Mountains

Colloquially known as a Welshie, the Welsh Terrier is said to have originated from the remote North Wales Mountain range in the 1700s. Due to its intelligence and high-energy nature, it was initially bred to hunt small animals like foxes, rodents, and badgers.

Welsh Terriers are great for families

Families who want to introduce a dog into their lives and households without upsetting the social dynamic should seriously consider a Welsh Terrier. Their friendly and outgoing nature lends to being incredibly affectionate with other family members, including young children and usually other dogs. In addition, they are eager to please – making them relatively easy to train.

Compared to other Terriers

Plenty of terrier types make up the overall terrier breed family. Jack Russel Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier, West Highland Terrier…we could go on. The Welsh Terrier is alert, playful and animated like other terriers.

Compared to the broader terrier breed, Welshies tend to be calmer, more collected, and less prone to barking out of turn. However, they might become vocal if their dog food bowl is empty when hungry!

Older Welshies can become overweight

While the Welsh Terrier is generally considered an active dog, it will slow down with time, especially given its above-average life expectancy between 12 and 15 years. The reduced walk duration could lead to significant weight gain over time.
