History of the Lakeland Terrier Breed Dog

The Lakeland Terrier is believed to be a ground-level hunting dog, typically employed by 1700s farmers and landowners trying to oust vermin from their property. It has been suggested that this activity led the breed to develop great stamina as they would spend all day chasing small animals.

In the 1920s, the breed became recognised by Kennel Clubs and other like-minded establishments. The Lakeland Terrier surged in popularity during the 1960s when two different Lakeland Terriers won the Best in Show award at Crufts.

Temperament and Training

While every dog has a unique personality and will react differently to training, Lakeland Terriers are generally smart enough to pick up new ideas their humans want to pass on. Most of these will respond well to treat-based training - however, some Lakeland Terriers need firmer guidance.

Lakeland Terriers can get along with other dogs but should be introduced gradually with care and patience. The same can be said about children, as they may not initially get along with younger family members.

Physical appearance attributes

The Lakeland Terrier is a small, sturdy dog that stands 13-15 inches tall and weighs 15-17 pounds. It has a wiry double coat in black, blue, red, or wheaten, often with tan markings. Its expressive dark eyes, V-shaped ears, and compact, muscular body reflect its agility and energy. With a confident demeanour and traditionally docked tail, this breed is hardy and spirited.

Global popularity of the Lakeland Terrier Breed dog

Given the roots of this British dog breed, it’s easy to understand why the Lakeland Terrier is popular in the United Kingdom and other English-speaking nations like Ireland, New Zealand and Australia.

However, the breed is also very popular in Slovenia, where multiple breed-specific clubs celebrate the Lakeland Terrier—potentially because the rugged Slovenian countryside is similar to the terrain of the Lake District, where the breed originated.

Nutritional needs of the Lakeland Terrier Breed

There are no specific dietary requirements for the Lakeland Terrier breed. However, providing them with a high-quality, protein-rich diet is always a wise choice to support their active and loyal nature.
